Four approaches to interaction design

1.user-centered design – user knows the best
2.activity-centered design – users’ behaviour
3.systems design – structured, rigorous, holistic
4.genius design – creativity of designer

What is a user-centered approach?

User-centered approach is based on the three principles:
1.Early focus on users and tasks: directly studying cognitive, behavioural, anthropomorphic & attitudinal characteristics
2.Empirical measurement:  users reactions and performance to scenarios, manuals, simulations & prototypes are observed, recorded and analysed
3.Iterative design: when problems are found in user testing, fix them and carry out more tests

Early focus on users and tasks

1.Users’ tasks and goals – what
2.Users’ behavior and context of use – how
3.Users’ characteristics – who
4.User consultation
5.Design decisions – users’ context/environment
